Prettiest Kisaeng: Song Hye Kyo

She is legendary in her world. The most famous and prettiest Kisaeng in the 16th Century. She is Hwang Jin Yi.

At first I was confused when I heard about this movie. I heard of a TV series with the same title last year but then when I saw the official poster of the movie I immediately realized the difference because it boasted the face of one of Korea’s loveliest, if not the loveliest, Song Hye Kyo. (Hold your horses, to each his own)

Based on a novel by a North Korean award winning writer Hong Sok Chung. This 10 billion won period movie is about the life of one of the most successful Kisaeng in the Joseon Dynasty. Kisaeng is Korea’s version of Japanese Geisha.

Hwang Jin Yi was born in the time where nobility is the name of the game. 16th Century Koreans thrives to be included in that exclusive group using all possible methods may it be good or bad.

Her future was sealed to a path of nobility. She was engaged to be married but it was discovered that her mother was not of nobility. Naturally, the engagement was off. She then entered the House of Kisaeng and learned all the right techniques in seducing men. With her beauty and numerous talent she became the most sought after kisaeng in Gaeseong now known as North Korea.

A doomed love affair awaits this beautiful courtesan played by Song Hye Kyo, famous for her successful TV dramas, All In, Autumn In My Heart, Hotelier and Full House to name a few. She was last seen in her debut movie My Girl and I back in 2005.
